Wood

We operate with renewable wood as our raw material, as we strive to minimize environmental impact and deliver high-quality, sustainable paperboard products.

The role of wood in paperboard production

Wood is the raw material for the production of sustainable paper-based materials, such as paper and paperboard. But paperboard is generally not made from the big stems of fully grown trees.

The highest economic value in trees is the parts that can be further processed in a sawmill. These parts form the raw material for construction timber used for houses and other wood products.

The leftover wood parts from the sawmills or forest management are turned into pulp to produce paper and paperboard. The top of the tree and the branches are used for renewable bioenergy.

Wood – a natural and renewable raw material

Holmen Board and Paper's operation is based on the renewable raw material wood, which provides products that can be recycled as both material and energy.

Active forest management ensures a healthy growth, at the same time as the wood can be used for construction and furniture that stores carbon. This is why wood is becoming an ever more important product in a more sustainable society, as wood captures carbon.

Growing forest stores the carbon dioxide from the air in trees and soil in the form of carbon. When the trees are felled and used for wood products, these products continue to store the carbon throughout the product's life.

Wood has a carbon content of around 50 per cent and is biogenic, meaning that the carbon is part of the natural cycle.

Our sister company Holmen Skog – "skog" is forest in Swedish – harvest around 1 per cent of their forest holdings every year and systematically regenerates forest on the harvested land. They always harvest less than the annual growth, and over the last 70 years, the standing stock in the forest has increased every year.

Bringing leftovers to life

Switching from fossil-based to renewable materials is essential. For our paperboards, we use leftover wood parts—from the sawmill or forest management—to make recyclable paperboard from renewable raw materials.
