Plastic Coatings

To attain specific properties, paperboard is coated with plastic to combine the mechanical properties of the paperboard with the barrier and sealing properties of plastic or foil and film. Molten plastic is applied using an extrusion process to paperboard as a thin, smooth layer of uniform thickness. The choice of material is determined by the desired properties.

Product description

Plastic coatings are used on paperboard to protect against liquids and to provide a barrier against moisture. Paperboard with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) coating is extremely temperature resistant and provides good sealability and an excellent oxygen and fat barrier. This makes it highly suitable for applications such as  microwave and conventional oven trays for the cooking or reheating of food, so called dual-ovenable trays. All PET coated paperboard can be used for applications up to 220°C, depending on the degree of fill. PET is also used to coat paperboard in applications such as tray lids. PET is offered primarily together with our Inverform range, as well as selected grades from our Invercote product range. Black, white and transparent-pigmented versions of PET coatings are available upon request.

Holmen recommends a maximum 1 (one) year time limit, from delivery, for board in storage.

For paperboard with barriers or foil lamination the recommended storage time is no longer than 6 (six) months due to declining effect of any surface treatments.

The above recommendations are only valid if the product is stored in its original wrapping.
