Barriers and coatings

Foil, film and plastic coatings can be added to paperboard material to enhance its performance for the intended end-use.

Added value with the right barrier

Barriers and coatings have multiple benefits when producing packaging. Depending on the end-use, the right barrier is chosen for the application, for example protection against moisture or UV light, temperature resistance or sealability.

Thanks to extensive product development and modern mill equipment, it is possible to minimize the amount of plastic used in the final product. Compared to fossil-based material, a thin plastic barrier makes it possible to reduce the carbon footprint of the product.

By using paperboard as a carrier, with a barrier, you can reduce the amount of plastic used to about a fifth of what would have been required for an equivalent rigid plastic container.

A thin barrier is really all you need to ensure that the contents of your paperboard packaging are protected.

Technical details

The barriers come with different finishing: glossy or matt. The choice of surface finish is dependent of application properties and converting process. The surfaces can also reduce the risk of blocking feeding sheets and blanks in the converting process. Typical values for our most common barriers are tested according to ASTM F-1249/DIN 53122 (water vapour permeability) and ASTM D-3985/DIN 53380 (oxygen permeability).

Plastic coating

Polyethylene (PE)

Polyethylene (PE) coated paperboard is suitable for disposable cups or packaging for frozen foods, meat products, and chocolate. The PE barrier also provides a simple yet efficient way to heat seal end-products.

Plastic coating

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) barriers provide good sealability, as well as acting as an excellent oxygen and fat barrier. It is extremely temperature resistant and highly suitable for applications such as PET coated dual-ovenable food trays.

Biodegradable packaging

Bio E

The Bio E barrier is based on renewable resources and adapted for organic recovery through composting or anaerobic digestion. The material is suitable for applications where biodegradability is desired.

Foil laminate

Alubarrier

Alubarrier is the densest barrier in the portfolio and is commonly used for sensitive products like crisps, ice cream and cereals. Extrusion-laminating the aluminium foil makes the board practically impermeable to light, moisture, flavours, and gases.
