Leveraging its long partnership with Holmen has helped The Estée Lauder Companies, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of quality skin care, makeup and other beauty products, to build a strong global supply chain as well as deliver on ambitious sustainability goals for its packaging.
What this partnership entails was the topic for a panel discussion at Luxe Pack New York in May 2023. Nirav Mehta, Vice President, Direct Procurement, The Estée Lauder Companies and Neal Haussel, Director Brand Owners & Sustainability, Holmen offered insights into why a close collaboration is necessary to drive progress and the value of proactive communication to help ensure supply chain resiliency.
By 2025, The Estée Lauder Companies are committed to increasing the amount of post-consumer recycled material in their packaging to 25% or more and to having all their paperboard-based packaging 100% FSC certified. Nirav Metha talks about making bold choices and the importance of partnering with key strategic suppliers to either co-invest or co-develop the technologies and the innovations that will help drive the sustainability front forward and setting an example for the rest of the industry to follow.
Neal Haussel addresses the broad collaboration Holmen offers. The goal of having 100% of the packaging FSC certified can be met thanks to the fact that Holmen has their own forest holdings, all of which are FSC certified. He further suggests that if the challenge is to find and develop innovative packaging solutions, Holmen can lean into their in-house future packaging team.
Both speakers also addressed the importance of having an ongoing dialogue in developing a shared long term business strategy and meeting supply chain expectations. Meeting the expectation of having an agile and responsive global supply chain was a clear result of that collaborative effort during the recent supply chain crisis.
The session was moderated by Alissa Demorest, Editorial Director, Luxe Packaging Insight, Formes de Luxe.
