Biodiversity

Everything in nature is connected. To create a more sustainable future, we all need to manage our resources carefully and protect the ecosystems.

Paperboard production based on sustainable forestry

The forest is the foundation of our production. In Sweden our sister company Holmen Skog supply our timber. Their forestry operations are in accordance with the provisions of the certification systems PEFC and FSC®, whose stipulations are designed to guarantee sustainable forest management and uphold biodiversity.

The timber used in the manufacturing of Incada is purchased from the Forestry Commissions of England and Scotland and is certified in accordance with FSC®.

There are many ways to preserve biodiversity. One of the most extreme measures is to light controlled forest fires. This is a way to stimulate the growth of insects and plants who only appear after a forest fire.

Come closer

Biodiversity is an important and integrated part of Holmen's work. Watch this movie to learn more about how we contribute and what we do in order to preserve the ecosystems affected by us and our production. The film in other languages is available here

Why is biodiversity important?

Biodiversity is defined as the variety among living organisms of all origins - diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. A varied forest environment with deciduous trees, watercourses and a wide range of animal species is vital to functioning ecosystems and thriving forests.

Our forest strategy focuses on achieving high and profitable growth while also ensuring that all naturally occurring species can thrive in the Swedish forest landscape.

Of the Holmen Group’s just over 1 million hectares of forested land, we use about 80 per cent for wood production and we always take far-reaching environmental conservation into account when managing and harvesting our forest.

Development has been rapid and we have learned a great deal about how we can foster healthy ecosystems while increasing forest growth.

We are convinced that it is through research and collaboration that we can continue to find new ways to promote both growth and biodiversity in our forests.

Each year, we invest close to € 17 million in caring for our forests and constantly work to improve everything from seedlings to nature conservation through research, development and education – all to ensure good growth and healthy ecosystems for future generations.

The Holmen Group conducts about a hundred research projects on our land, both on our own and in collaboration with research organizations, universities and other stakeholders.

The forests

Forests are home to around 80 per cent of the world’s biodiversity and to Holmen's business. This means we have a certain responsibility to help prevent deforestation by only using material from forests that are being regenerated. We also want to learn more, and the Holmen Group has dedicated areas that are studied in order to gain more knowledge about biodiversity and sustainable forest management.

Our use of water

Holmen's mills are located next to the important maritime environments of the Baltic and Irish seas. This means we have a responsibility to handle our water with care. We borrow water, use it, clean it and return it. In cooperation with local authorities, we also monitor the water ecosystems that we borrow from carefully.

Our energy practices

We have reduced the emissions of sulphur and nitrogen dramatically the last 20 years, lessening the negative impact on the lakes and streams surrounding our mills. The emission of contaminants into the atmosphere can negatively affect the biodiversity of our ecosystems. Therefore, to further protect biodiversity, we are increasing our use of green energy generated from biofuels and water.
