The design for the Lunar New Year card is inspired by two Asian motifs – the Koi fish and the oriental folding screen. The Koi is a symbol of good luck, prosperity and strength, while the oriental folding screen was traditionally used as a form of protection from drafts and as a display art. The designs on the folding screens often include figures and symbols that carry auspicious meanings, such as dragons, peonies or koi – as in our card.
