Plastic Coatings

To attain specific properties, paperboard is coated with plastic to combine the mechanical properties of the paperboard with the barrier and sealing properties of plastic or foil and film. Molten plastic is applied using an extrusion process to paperboard as a thin, smooth layer of uniform thickness. The choice of material is determined by the desired properties.

Product description

Bio E is a barrier coating offered in combination with several of Holmen Iggesund’s paperboards. The bio-based coating is particularly suitable as an alternative to PE as a barrier against grease and liquids, e.g. ice cream, cups and chilled food.
It is made from 75 per cent renewable raw materials and is approved for industrial composting. The material is suitable for applications where biodegradability is desired, and it is a more environmentally friendly option to fossil-based solutions. It conforms to the European Standard regarding composability (EN 13432) works well in most recycling systems and fulfils requirements for food contact.
