Since 2009, MR Cartonnage Numérique has been providing small print runs of mock-ups and prototypes to clients in the luxury cosmetics and fragrance industries. Its decision to invest in digital offset has made MR the only packaging printer in France capable of printing on high-grammage paper, whilst ensuring a complete mastery of colour and providing the quality of packaging required by luxury brands.

“MR is able to partner luxury brands from the creation process right through to production, thanks to an in-depth expertise with high-quality digital offset printing,” says Jonathan Mihy, founder of MR Cartonnage Numérique. “From design trials to colour searches and cardboard validation, MR is able to carry out extensive testing in order to ensure that the client’s requirements are faithfully translated into the finished package.”

"Digital printing means that MR Cartonnage Numérique was able to produce this tiny print run in a very short space of time."

Creative marketing teams can now use a digital printer to run off an example that will be virtually identical to the finished product, Mihy says. With MR Cartonnage Numérique’s HP Indigo digital printers, changes can be made to the design at any point, ensuring the utmost flexibility and responsiveness for the customer.

MR Cartonnage Numérique recently produced a run of 250 packages for Prada’s Candy fragrance for a corporate seminar. The boxes were printed using a pink PMS colour with CMYK four-colour printing, a selective UV gloss and leather texture with gold hot foil stamping on Invercote G 300 g/m². “Digital printing means that MR Cartonnage Numérique was able to produce this tiny print run in a very short space of time,” says Mihy. “The pack can now be reproduced on an industrial scale, should the client require.”

Another example is a pack for one of French perfume house Guerlain’s Blanc de Perle skincare products. The box sleeve offers opaque white print with simulated gold hot foil stamping on metallic silver Invercote G 300 g/m². The cartons are used by Guerlain as mock-ups for an exhibition of tax-free products. “This pack illustrates the quality that MR Cartonnage Numérique can offer with what looks like a relatively simple design,” Mihy says.

Mock-ups created for French perfumer Diptyque’s special Christmas packages illustrate the flexibility of digital printing in terms of colour matching, where colours can be changed quickly, with no time lost on ink preparation. “These packs used three pms colours and full-surface hot foil stamping on the reverse, uncoated side of Invercote G 300 g/m²,” says Mihy. “MR Cartonnage Numérique produced the mock-ups for colour validation purposes so that Diptyque could be sure they were obtaining the exact colour ranges they needed for this pilot series,” he explains.

MR Cartonnage Numérique produced creative mock-ups and a pilot series for French perfumer Diptyque.

MR Cartonnage is currently able to produce runs of up to 10,000 units with its digital solutions, but the next generation of digital print machines from hp will offer the capacity for larger paper sizes and bigger print runs. “It’s a major investment, but the thanks to the reputation MR Cartonnage Numérique has already acquired in this field, such an investment would be a natural step,” Mihy says.
