The energy produced by the boiler represents an emissions reduction of 190,000 tonnes per year. Presently, 35 per cent of this fossil-free energy is being fed into the UK’s national electricity grid.

The boiler was originally intended to use 500,000 tonnes of biomass per year, but after an upgrade that has increased to 600,000 annual tonnes. The biomass comes almost exclusively from northern England and Scotland, supplied by many different sources, but the supply of energy crops from farmers has steadily increased since 2013.

“It’s positive that we’ve established the joint venture that our Grow Your Income growers network involves and that some of the money in circulation around an industrial plant such as Iggesund’s benefits the local farming community”, says Ian Black, Head of Pulp and Power at Iggesund in Workington.
